A man who was due to appear in court at Preston on Monday on charges of attempted murder has been found dead in his cell at the city’s prison.
William O’Mara, 45, was on remand following a series of incidents which began at a caravan park in Heysham last month in which a car collided with a number of people – one of them dying a week later in hospital.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “William O’Mara, who was on remand at HMP Preston, was found unresponsive in his cell at about 3.20am on Thursday October 2.
“Paramedics attended, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
“As with all deaths in custody, the Independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.”
Mr O’Mara, of Norland Drive, Morecambe, was arrested shortly after the incident which began when a woman suffered a head injury at the Ocean Edge holiday park on the evening of Saturday September 20.
As the car left the site it collided with 42-year-old Paul Clark, who suffered serious injuries and died on September 27. There were a number of other collisions before the driver was apprehended.
Mr O’Mara was scheduled to appear in Preston Crown Court on Monday to face three charges of attempted murder, wounding with intent, two cases of grievous bodily harm, assaulting a police officer and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
